On Saturday, 15 November 2025 I attended the Gloomaar Festival at the Neue Gebläsehalle in Neunkirchen (Saarland, Germany). The venue stood out with its wide open hall, excellent sight-lines and an inviting atmosphere for immersive music. It provided an ideal setting for a postrock festival dedicated to expansive soundscapes and bold live performances.
The Performances
MONO: They lifted me off the ground. Their tone was powerful, heavy and full of dramatic rises and deep moments. I have always believed MONO deliver one of the best live shows at a postrock festival, and seeing them again on 17 November in Cologne reinforced that impression.
Bruit ≤: My first time seeing them live and I hadn’t explored their recordings deeply before. The performance was breathtaking. They used background visuals during their set that made me think of projection-led bands such as Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Nordic Giants. The visual element turned the show into a full journey rather than simply a concert — a highlight of the postrock festival.
Oh Hiroshima: They gave me the exact experience I hoped for. They played their full album In Silence We Yearn live from start to finish and hearing it in one go at a postrock festival was pure bliss. That album has grown into one of my favourites and hearing it live elevated it even more.
Glasgow Coma Scale: My first live encounter with this Frankfurt/Main-based band (Germany). Their songs offered steady rhythms, strong tone and a groove that edged toward stoner rock but fitted perfectly into the postrock festival context. I enjoyed their set more than I expected.
I also want to note that Overhead, The Albatross, Coltaine and Alex Henry Foster & The Long Shadows delivered solid performances. They may not have been my top picks but they contributed greatly to the strong overall line-up of the postrock festival.
